Contrary to most beliefs, casino
games—in online or on-land venues—were not invented by gamblers. They were a
product of Great Mathematicians’ imagination, curiosity, and “accidents.”
While the exact origin of
gambling is unknown, the activity has plenty of historical details that
eventually led to how it appears in the modern times. Most games in the service
have a global reach and their ubiquitous presence is testament to their massive
popularity and large following. However, they were not originally intended to
serve gambling operations. The big brains behind them had other purposes in
mind. Here are some of the most commonly played games in casinos with their
interesting back story:
Roulette. In his research for a “perpetual motion machine,” French
genius Blaise Pascal unknowingly developed a primitive version of the “little
wheel.” Of course, his experiment failed but it ‘accidentally’ created the
roulette game that the world knows today. If the wheel never stopped spinning
(which was what Pascal wanted to prove), it could have never produced a winner.
Electronic lottery and scratch. Scientist John Koza of the
Scientific Games Corporation is credited to be one of the first developers of computer-generated
instant lottery game. More than a decade later, data acquisition and analysis
systems firm Astro-Med, Inc. was granted the patent for the instant scratch-off
lottery card.
Slot machine. In 1887, San Francisco car mechanic Charles Fey came
up with the first ever slot machine. His invention comprised of three spinning
reels with a total of five symbols: horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts, and a
Liberty Bell—the technology’s first name.
A lot has happened since these
games were invented and today, they are played in almost every platform. They
are a permanent fixture in brick-and-mortar casinos as well as the main
attractions in online gaming venues.
