Pontoon is far from being an online casino blackjack variant. As a matter of fact, it combines the principles of two
games—blackjack and poker.
The blackjack influence is shown in the game’s objective and that is to
get a total card value of 21 or close to it. Poker, on the other hand, makes
its presence felt through the hierarchy of hands observed in the game.
How to play Pontoon
Even green horns, as long as they have the prior knowledge to blackjack,
can play Pontoon. They simply need to know the game’s difference to avoid
confusion.
Starting off, Pontoon has 2 hands that beat blackjack. These are pontoon
and the so-called five-card trick.
In Pontoon, the player’s hand contains an Ace and a 10 or another
picture card.
In both instances, Pontoon and five-card trick will always beat
blackjack.
It is also important to understand that in a tie, the dealer always get
the upper hands and it has no insurance.
Splitting is allowed for cards, which are of equal rank. In case the
player gets an Ace, ten or a picture card, the hand is still considered as
Pontoon.
The hand ranking
As mentioned, the game observes a hand ranking just like in Poker. This
will definitely help the player win more from the game.
a. Pontoon – comprised of an Ace, 10 or a picture card
b. Five card trick – made up of 5 cards, which have a total card value of 21
c. 21 – 3 to 4 cards with a total value of 21
d. High total – 2 to 4 cards with a total value of 21
e. Bust – a hand that has a total value of more than 21
