Hole
carding, if executed properly, defies all strategies and techniques used
against casinos. It can bring down the house and fill the player’s pockets with
paycheques. Although commonly used in blackjack, this has been also applied in
other card games such as poker.
What is a hole card?
Briefly
defined, a hole card is the face-down card given to the dealer. Hole carding,
therefore, is the approach used to know the hole card’s value, lower the house
advantage and give edge to the player.
Types of hole carding technique
There
are several types of hole carding techniques. These are first basing and
spooking.
First basing – First basing is simple. As a
matter of fact, you’ve been using these technique since the first time you laid
your hands on a deck of cards. How does it work? You only need to take a quick
peek of the dealer’s hole card. If you’re
just playing with your friends, this one is easy. But if you’re in a
casino, you need to be a little bit more strategic and even creative at times,
to execute that quick snapshot.
Spooking – You need to form allies when
spooking. It can be your friend, your brother or your boss—anyone will do. As
long as you trust that person, he or she can be your spooking partner. When
spooking, your ally must secretly communicate to you the hole card’s value. He
or she must position himself accordingly to get a better view. But not to the
point where the dealer gets a hint of what your ally wants to do.
Hole carding works. There’s no doubt about that. Yet, just like any other
strategy. You need to master it to implement it effectively.
