The Roulette Table Layout: A Hybrid of Thrill and Elegance

The roulette table is one of the most intelligently designed layouts in casinos, both land-based and online. The design does seem intricate—and indeed, it is—but a deeper acquaintance with it will essentially make playing a lot easier.

The Wheel

There is no roulette without a wheel—the centerpiece of the game’s storied façade. Roulette’s main object is to pick the correct winning number that will appear on the wheel. Equally common bets are colors (red, black) and the parity value of the numbers (odd, even).

The Layout

While there is a gamut of roulette table layouts, the European style is the most commonly used in online gambling venues. The single-zero design is wide and is composed of two betting areas: inside and outside. The inside betting area contains the individual numbers on the layout. The outside betting area has boxes for the columns, red/black and odd/even and different groups of numbers.

French bets

The flexibility of roulette has also allowed the invention of more betting options outside the original layout. Today (and even before), it is already common to see bets like Neighbors, Voisins du Zero, Tiers, and Orphans on roulette tables. These bets are found outside the main layout and represent a whole new set of betting combinations (for example, the Tiers represent the twelve numbers which lie on the opposite side of the wheel between 27 and 33 including 27 and 33 themselves).
