Battle of the Blackjacks: American Blackjack vs. European Blackjack

Blackjack’s presence in online casinos is almost as widespread as the industry itself. In terms of the ease of playing, other card games are no match to it. However, even for such a very simple game, variations still exist. In fact, there are two most common forms of blackjack that are currently being offered at both online and traditional casinos: American and European. The following the key differences between the two:

  • In this variant, the dealers receive two cards instead of just one: one face-up and one face-down. They also peek for a blackjack if their face-up card is an Ace. In this case, all players without a blackjack automatically lose.
  • If the dealer has an Ace (face-up), players have the chance to surrender. This way, they can save up to half of their wager in case the dealer inevitably wins.
  • American blackjack also allows players to double down on any hand.

  • In this game, the croupier is only dealt with one face-up card. That means to say that he or she cannot peek for a natural blackjack before the players make decisions.
  • This variant only yields two absolute results: win and lose. Surrendering is not an option and it is always a win-all-or-nothing situation.
  • With European blackjack, players can only double down on hands totaling to nine, 10, or 11.

Based on their respective characteristics, American blackjack could be a better variant for players. Not only does it offer more options, but it also gives them the opportunity to lessen their losses (that is, if they lose) or increase their winnings.
